NRG Energy (NRG) In A Tug Of War with San Antonio On Texas Nuclear Expansion

NRG Energy met with San Antonio officials to resolve the long standing issue regarding the expansion of Texas' largest nuclear facility. However, the meeting ended without the parties arriving at a common resolution.

The meeting was called to resolve the differences between NRG, its nuclear development arm, and CPS Energy. CPS Energy is owned by the City of San Antonio. CPS Energy is a 50-50 partner with Nuclear Innovation North America (NINA), a partnership between NRG and Toshiba Corp, in the expansion of the South Texas Project.

The dispute is with regards to CPS Energy backing off a plan to invest in two new 1,350-megawatt reactors due to rising cost projections. NRG feels that CPS Energy’s backing off might impact the company’s chances of obtaining the federal loan guarantee.
